How is colored aluminum sheet produced?
2026-05-07
The production of colored aluminum panels is a process that integrates materials science with precision manufacturing. At its core, the workflow begins with the selection of high‑quality aluminum substrates, typically from the 3000 or 1000 series alloys, which offer an optimal balance of strength and ductility. The first step involves surface pretreatment: an alkaline solution is used to remove oil and natural oxide layers from the aluminum surface, followed by acid pickling for neutralization, thereby forming a dense chemical conversion coating. This critical step ensures excellent adhesion of the subsequent coating.
In the coating process, roller coating or spray application is employed to evenly apply high-performance coatings such as fluorocarbon and polyester to the aluminum panel surface. Some premium products utilize a “three-coat, three-bake” process, in which primer, topcoat, and clear coat are applied in distinct layers and cured through multiple baking cycles, ensuring a coating thickness of 30–40 μm while enhancing weather resistance through the addition of UV‑stabilizing agents. The baking temperature is tightly controlled within the range of 220–250°C, enabling chemical bonding between the coating molecules and the aluminum substrate.
For complex graphic requirements, UV inkjet printing delivers high‑precision multi‑color layering by using ultraviolet light to instantly cure the ink, with a resolution exceeding 1200 dpi. In contrast, screen printing achieves three‑dimensional effects through custom‑made screens, making it well suited for large‑area solid colors or smooth gradient transitions. The production environment must maintain strict dust‑free standards to prevent particulate contamination from compromising surface gloss.
After the final product is protected with a laminating film, it is slit and packaged according to its intended application, such as architectural curtain walls or interior decoration. The entire process comprises more than 20 production steps, and each batch of aluminum panels is rigorously inspected using a colorimeter to ensure that the ΔE value remains below 1.5, thereby meeting international standards for architectural decorative materials.
