What is the production process for color-coated coils?

The production process of color-coated coils is a multi‑stage, precision‑controlled continuous manufacturing operation. Its core steps include substrate preparation, surface pretreatment, coating application, baking and curing, and cooling and winding.
Substrates are typically made of hot-dip galvanized sheet, electro‑galvanized sheet, or cold‑rolled steel, and must have a smooth, defect‑free surface. During the pretreatment stage, alkaline degreasing, chemical cleaning, and passivation are employed to thoroughly remove oils and contaminants from the substrate surface and to form a chemical conversion coating that enhances coating adhesion and corrosion resistance. Some processes also incorporate a surface‑conditioning step, using mildly acidic solutions to optimize the substrate’s surface condition.
Coating is applied by roller coating, with two separate coats: a primer and a topcoat. The primer has a thickness of approximately 5–7 microns and primarily provides corrosion protection and enhances adhesion; the topcoat, 10–20 microns thick, determines color saturation and weather resistance. Coating types are selected based on application—polyester coatings are suitable for architectural use, while fluorocarbon coatings are preferred for high-end buildings or automotive applications.
During the baking and curing stage, the coating is cross‑linked and cured at high temperatures of 170–220°C, forming a dense protective layer. After cooling, tension‑controlled winding is employed to prevent deformation of the coating. Some processes further incorporate a topcoat varnish application to enhance scratch resistance and gloss. The entire production process is carried out on a continuous line, ensuring stable product performance and high efficiency.
